Elliptical MachineAn elliptical machine, or sometimes known as a cross-trainer, is a stationary piece of fitness equipment which can work both the upper and lower body at one time while greatly reducing the impact on joints. They provide a cardiovascular workout and can be either self-powered or electrically powered to supply the electronic controls and resistance settings.

Some advantages of owning an elliptical include:

  • Regardless of poor weather outside, you can workout inside.
  • On most models you can easily track distance, speed, calories burned, and heart rate.
  • You control the pace of the machine and resistance settings.
  • You can watch TV while exercising on the machine, instead of sitting still.
  • Low impact makes it much easier on your feet, knees, and back than treadmills.
  • You can workout your arms and upper back by increasing the handle tension.

Some of the disadvantages include:

  • They can cost a lot of money. A gym quality machine can cost over $2000.
  • They take up a lot of space.
  • The movement is not a natural movement so it might take some time to get used to.
  • Need to turn resistance level up high to be truly effective.
  • Since they are one-size-fits-all, they might not work for someone either really short or really tall.
